How to Make Your Nail Polish Last Longer: 8 Tips That Actually Work

There's nothing more frustrating than a fresh manicure that chips on day two. The good news: how long your polish lasts depends as much on how you apply it as on the polish itself. These eight habits make the biggest difference.

1. Start with clean, dry nails

Oils and lotion residue keep polish from gripping the nail. Wipe each nail with nail polish remover before you start, even if you don't have old polish on. Let them dry completely.

2. Don't soak your nails right before painting

Nails absorb water and expand slightly. If you paint right after a bath or dishes, the polish can crack as they shrink back. Wait at least an hour.

3. Always use a base coat

A base coat gives color something to grip and helps protect your natural nail from staining. Choose one for your nail type: Thirsty Nails for dry nails, Calcium Boost for weak or thin nails, or Fill & Fix if you have ridges.

4. Apply thin coats

Thick coats take longer to dry and are more likely to smudge and peel. Apply a thin first coat, wait a few minutes, then add a second thin coat.

5. Cap the free edge

After each coat, run the brush lightly along the tip of your nail. This "caps" the edge, which is where chipping usually starts.

6. Finish with a top coat

Top coat protects color from everyday wear. Use Dry Me Fast when you're short on time, Glassy Gel for a gel-like shine, or Hard to Chip for extra durability.

7. Reapply top coat every two to three days

A fresh layer of top coat midweek restores shine and adds protection, especially along the tips.

8. Protect your hands

Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning, and use your fingertips, not your nails, to open cans and peel stickers. Keep cuticles moisturized with cuticle oil, since dry skin around the nail can lift polish.

How long should nail polish last?

With good prep, a base coat and a top coat, a quality regular polish can last several days without chipping. Eternal nail polish wears for up to 6 days. How long yours lasts will also depend on your nails and how much you use your hands.
